My Background
I started my time as a furniture maker in the early 1970's with my Father and older brother in the family business; Joseph Charteris & Sons Cabinetmakers & Chairmakers, Markich, Fife, Scotland. My dad served his time with Donald Grant & Sons, Edinburgh, Scotland, in the 1930's
We worked closely with the Antique Trade throughout the seventies and eighties and this sent a very wide variety of fine antique furniture through our shop and provided an excellent first hand education in antique furniture restoration and repair. The majority of the family business was commissions and other manufacturing. I have produced commissions and carried out restoration and conservation work for many of the finest homes and castles in southern Scotland.
I came to America in the late eighties to produce a product line and teach apprentices for a company in Virginia. I have supplied production models and samples of fine furniture for some of Americas largest manufacturing companies (see portfolio).
